17 March 2012 - Showcasing band competition performance to Parents
On 17 March 2012, the parents of our West Spring Band Members visited the school to watch a full-dress performance by the band.
Parent Support Group (Band)This is one of the first steps to outreach to all parents by showcasing the production that their children have painstakingly worked together to come up with.
Plans are in the pipeline to engage parents in tea-sessions, educating them on:
The advantages of joining a marching band,
How they can support their children in the band,
How can they contribute to the band
Testimonial sharing on how the band has helped their child in their character development and academics.
"I have witnessed the positive changes in Nuraina since being a part of WSSS Band. There will be days when the band practices are in full swing in preparation for SYF and she will be very tired. Looking at her being lethargic, I advised her not to attend practice for the day. She would say that its crucial that she do not let her fellow band members down. She would ask me to get her vitamin supplements instead. As a mother I do worry for her health but I do trust her more. I believe she understood the importance and respected her fellow mates.
She wrote in her NUS application on what she believed to be the pivotal experience in shaping her character. This is what she wrote...
"I would always remember the 12th of April 2008 as one of the pivotal moments of my teenage years. That was the day when my secondary school competed amongst the best school marching bands in Singapore (SYF Display Band Competition). Even though we did not win the Gold Medal, what I took away from that experience was even more. The journey in preparing for competition is what I treasure most. Dedication and discipline directed my life in ways that I can never imagined. I now realized that these traits were crucial in empowering me through my ‘A’ Levels. The long training hours, particularly when we carried on marching despite being drenched on the field many a time will forever be embedded in my mind. The camaraderie, commitment and perseverance fostered deeply amongst us instilled values that are close to my heart. As a Flute Section Leader, I was entrusted with the task of motivating my peers and being responsible for them."
Nuraina has indeed been more focus on what she wants since. Mr Seet (Principal 2006-2011) fondly remembers Nuraina from being a very timid, shy Sec 1 girl in 2006 to a more confident young lady in 2009.
He wrote for Nuraina in support for her NUS Scholarship. The Band has indeed shaped her into a better, more focus, more determined and more confident young individual."
